All five Washington chapters and the Western WA campus club took part in cleanups over the April 20th weekend in the spirit of Earth Day. Most chapter's were on the coast as part of the annual CoastSavers Washington Coastal cleanup while the Western club and the Seattle chapter held cleanups in the Puget Sound.
All across western WA, beach goers were met with some very welcomed sunshine drawing out the numbers to various locations. At Locust Beach in Bellingham, the Western club continued their years-long stewardship of the area with a cleanup to match their regular water-monitoring at this popular kite-boarding location. The club is actively hosting beach cleanups in the Bellingham area so if you'd like to get involved please give their Facebook page a like to stay updated on upcoming opportunities.
It was another year at Golden Gardens for the Seattle chapter who hosted another cleanup at this prime and heavily visited city park. The chapter's long-standing cleanup serves as a kick-off to the busy summer season with multiple events and volunteer opportunities available. The Olympia, South Sound and Olympic Peninsula chapters took to the coast as part of the annual Washington Coastal Cleanup coordinated by CoastSavers. Olympia hosted registration and a BBQ at Twin Harbors in Westport, the South Sound did the same based out of 3 Rivers near La Push, and the Olympic Peninsula chapter grilled up their legendary food at Hobuck Beach in Neah Bay for volunteers. The results were over one thousand pounds of garbage removed from our beaches by Surfrider and partner efforts.
