Washington Regional Manager
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Surfrider Foundation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activists network, is seeking a highly motivated person for the position of Washington Regional Manager. This individual must have a background in direct action organizing and grassroots outreach. The main objective for this position is to increase the organizational capacity of our Washington chapter network through strategic outreach on environmental campaigns and programs leading to an increase in activists and membership. The successful applicant will work in a coordinated effort with Washington Policy Manager & Washington chapter network.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate the local and statewide campaign and program efforts of chapters within the region.
- Assist in growing statewide membership.
- Facilitate and train chapter volunteers in direct action organizing techniques including, but not limited to; campaign planning, recruitment, retention, strategy, tactics and program implementation.
- Assist the Washington chapter network in developing, implementing, and strengthening chapter programs including Ocean Friendly Gardens, Ocean Friendly Restaurants, Blue Water Task Force, Rise Above Plastics and student network outreach.
- Represent Surfrider Foundation at local and state administrative hearings and public events when necessary.
- In conjunction with the Surfrider staff develop and maintain positive relations with the regional funding community and timely reporting on grant deliverables and grant proposal development.
- Coordinate with the Director of Chapters and other PNW Surfrider staff to develop and facilitate statewide training conferences for the PNW chapter network.
- Collaborate with the Washington Policy Manager to promote statewide legislative campaigns and engage volunteers (throughout the chapter network) where appropriate.
- Engage in outreach and consensus building with ocean stakeholders including: non-consumptive users, commercial and recreational fishermen, conservationists, etc.
- Collaborate with the Washington Policy Manager on relative grant deliverables.
- Administrative Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; writing newsletter articles, supporting web content development, social media outreach and grant reporting.
- Facilitate chapter governance and oversight, including but not limited to: chapter annual planning and reporting, executive and leadership training and cultivation and develop “chapter resources.”
- Maintain the Surfrider Foundation National Campaign Victory section of our website to include the Canadian Chapter network campaign victories.
- Provide direct oversight to our three British Columbia Chapters and management in the areas of chapter organizing structure, assist in helping to meet and maintain the minimum chapter operating standards and serve as the primary contact for resource questions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required.
- Experience in direct action grassroots organizing, community outreach and coalition building.
- Knowledge of state, regional and national coastal & ocean environmental issues and management.
- Demonstrated facilitation skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing with elected officials, agency staff, industry representatives and ocean stakeholders.
- Experience in speaking publicly in front of a large number of people in diverse situations.
- Ability to travel extensively throughout Western Washington.
- Ability to work flexible hours (including some weekends and evenings).
- Ability to work effectively, remotely from a home office.
- Ability to work independently.
- This position emphasizes the skill sets of an experienced community organizer.
SALARY & BENEFITS:
This is a full-time position. Candidates will preferably be based in Western Washington. The Washington Regional Manager will be paid a competitive salary commensurate with candidate’s experience level, starting at $50K. The Surfrider Foundation offers a salary that is competitive with other national, not-for-profit conservation organizations.
