The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council will hold their next meeting on July 17th from 9:30am-3:30pm in The Landing Building Room #205 in Port Angeles, check out the agenda for more info.
The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established in 1999 to provide advice on the management and protection of the sanctuary. A community-based body, the Advisory Council, through its members, serves as a liaison to the community regarding sanctuary issues and represents community interests, concerns, and management needs to the sanctuary. The council is comprised of representatives of Indian tribes, state and local governments, other federal agencies, maritime industry, fishing, education, tourism, conservation organizations and the community at large. The group provides an invaluable service as subject experts, a sounding board for potential management decisions and spokespersons for the broader community. Surfrider Foundation's Washington Coastal Program Manager, Casey Dennehy, serves on the Advisory Council in the alternate seat for Marine Resource Committees.
The Advisory Council meetings are open to the public. The agenda is full of good topics including: progress report from Climate Change Working Group, update on Sanctuary Classic, and recommendations from Executive Committee on Commercial Fishing seat. An overview of the Cassin’s Auklet wreck this past winter by Dr. Julia Parrish, sanctuary-related aspects of WDOE’s Marine and Rail Oil Transportation study by Scott Ferguson, a presentation on ecosystem indicators work by Dr. Chris Harvey of NWFSC, an informational overview about Olympic Culinary Loop by newest SAC member Steve Shively, and a briefing of marine debris regional/international coordination in Pacific Rim by Dr. Nancy Messmer.
