Hands Across the Sand is an international grassroots event that brings people together to oppose new offshore oil drilling and promote a clean energy future that will help end our dependence on fossil fuels. Surfrider Foundation is an official sponsor and the event is a cornerstone of our Not the Answer campaign opposing offshore drilling.

The Washington coast & Salish Sea are facing a number of massive, ill advised fossil fuel projects such as a coal export terminal at Cherry Point near Bellingham, and new and expanded oil terminals in the Sound, Columbia River, and Grays Harbor...a major spill from any one of these threaten our water quality and recreational enjoyment that contributes to our quality of life here in the PNW. At the same time we have the opportunity to be a leader in advancing renewable energy technology such as wind, solar, tidal and wave energy resources that are part of the solution.
The premise of Hands Across The Sand is very simple: on May 16 at 12pm local time people will join hands for 15 minutes on beaches around the world to champion clean energy solutions to our filthy fuels problem. All events are organized locally by volunteers and the event website has all of the information needed to help make your event a success.
Hands Across the Sand is a terrific opportunity to participate in a national grassroots movement to protect our coasts from offshore drilling. It’s also a great way to recruit new members and volunteers in your community.
If your chapter plans to participate, please let your regional manager Brice know. Also, Pete Stauffer, Surfrider Ocean Program Manager, is helping coordinate the event at the national level and can provide support to your chapter for organizing the event.
