Surfrider Washington is STOKED that voters in Washington state have upheld the state’s landmark climate legislation, the Climate Commitment Act, by rejecting Initiative 2117.
With initial election results showing over 61% (as of Nov. 5, 2024) rejecting I-2117 (with more ballots counted in the coming days), voters have resoundingly demonstrated their support for state-level climate action. This sends a strong message against any future efforts to repeal or water down the Climate Commitment Act or its investments in our state's lands and waters.
Washingtonians have sent an overwhelming message that we want action on climate change and we want industries that are polluting our air and water to pay for the impacts to our communities.
We are grateful to the No on 2117 campaign and to the nearly 600 coalition partners, including all 6 Washington chapters and numerous other groups, businesses, unions, Tribal Nations, and more from across Washington State who worked tirelessly and collaboratively to block this harmful initiative.
A huge shoutout and thanks to all the volunteers who supported our oceans, waves, and breaches by raising awareness, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and spreading the word about the Climate Commitment Act. Grassroots activism at its finest!
