The South Sound chapter based in Tacoma, WA worked effectively with community members, organizations, and the city on researching, developing, and passing the Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance on July 12th, 2016. As per city rules and the makeup of the ordinance, it required one year for implementation. That time has come and the South Sound chapter is once again working with the city to assist with the rollout of the new policy.
The South Sound chapter has been a positive and proactive member of the Tacoma community. Running regular beach cleanups, conducting a local water monitoring program, and taking part in ocean acidification research, the chapter is invested in healthy beaches and waterways in their backyard. The Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance was another example of just that but from a policy driven position which in cooperation with partners and community members led to it's passing.
The chapter spent a few years building interest, providing public comment, and advocating for the ordinance which found success in it's passage. But passing an ordinance is just another step along the way in making actual improvements as now the critical phase of enacting such a policy takes shape. In the coming weeks the chapter will work with the city on distributing free reusable bags to store-goers. If you would like to help make this as smooth a process as possible and assist the chapter in their efforts, please contact them to learn how.
